![]() Speech & Debate Review By Alison HalletThe Portland Mercury October 27, 2008 Artists Repertory Theatre gets within shooting range of relevance with Speech and Debate, a show set in a Salem, Oregon high school that features chat rooms, text message lingo, and a hip soundtrack full of rocking tunes like "Boom Boom (I Want You in My Room)." The script, about three misfits who come together around a gay teacher's alleged misconduct, is an unhappy marriage of effortlessly funny, natural dialog and strained, goofy plot points. The talented young cast manages to overcome both the dorkiness of the music and the clunkiness of the script to deliver fresh, hilarious, and nuanced performances.
